He's making a joke about Dexter's gloves. In The Wizard, a movie by Nintendo that was a blatant attempt to sell stuff, a character says the line: "I love the Power Glove, it's so bad." The joke is a reference to that line, which has gone memetic.
I personally think the 2012 one fits the comic better, doesn't necessarily mean the past one was that bad for machinery design is not something easy to come by on an average scale even if it doesn't look functional, however the atmosphere itself requires a more detailed and edgy visual to it which the 2012 provides; when I look back with a more critical eye devoid of nostalgic dashes, the cartoon(ier) style was far too contrasting to the plot's "adultness", even though it seems like a creative idea, the attempt at having the story be taken seriously the way we wish people to see backfires partially, it's basically the old "highly detailed art - goofy plot", but inverted. If we also consider that the comic contains a good deal of nonsensical jokes, the statement that the current style matches the composition becomes once again appropriate for the style is still cartoon(y), but not too much. You have improved greatly in the past years, but this is kind of redundant, isn't it? Comics inevitably offer a good deal of practice over time~
