Hey, just now got to reading the whole The Grim Tales From Down Below saga. Just now found out that there was a website with all the chapters of it in it. Also found out from a Wiki that there was a huge political issue about a certain tiny section of the comic. Now this I had to see. It was breath-taking to say the least. I love the cartoon to bits and you turned in around and made the whole thing come to life. As for the controversy, that has to suck, all the drama, but hey, we got our freedom of press and speech. I am SOOO glad that this part of the saga got to stay up. You have no idea…or maybe you do, how much this has impacted lives. We need people like you to remind us that crap like 9/11 and wars will never stop…until the world blows up at least. I was a bit distressed when I heard you had a poll up…thought that everyone wanted it down, but if it was up to me, I won’t really give a crap…I would still have the thing up…because of its deep meaning and there are so many stupid, pathetic people out there that just don’t get it. But I am SHOCKED that people actually want it to stay! YAY!!! The world ain’t as bad off as I thought it was!!! ^-^ Cheers dood! Looks like you have gained yet another big fan!
I admire your decision on making a poll on whether or not to have that page in the comic.
I can't really say much about keeping/removing the page in the comic. I'm all for freedom of expression, really! But in some cases in stories, there is a range on how far you can go. Since there is a vast majority on this poll seem to be in favor of keeping it, keep it then. I suggest, (anyone who has been affected by that event or was easily upset but loves the series) just ignore that one page, it didn't exactly had a huge part in the overall story.
It's relevant to the plot, so you should leave it in. Just be a little more sensitive and careful. You're relating a fictional story to the actual world with real pain + suffering, not everyone feels as passionate about cartoon characters as you do.
I was close to vote for shi t who cares casue in my eyes all humans should say what they want and stump upon false respect. but then I considered that I wasnt attracted by the comic at first hand and simply started to love it... so... hell who gives a shit about what we think. I love it like it is... yup. thats it.
That message you added in on snafu? I agree with you man, wholeheartedly. Granted, I'm a bit more of a softy then you so I don't say stuff like that, (that and Mandy would probebly have a feild day with me, if she ever even cared to try) but I understand. Right here. *points to belly*
XD Sorry, had to lighten the mood. But seriously mate, good job.
I can't say whether or not to remove it, personally. That is obviously your choice. Personally. I think the inclusion of real world events was tasteless.
These things are very personal and to rationalize them in the way of a comic is dehumanizing. It makes it seem like less of a big deal, you know?
I think if you want to do this sort of thing it requires a lot more thought. Placing grim in the photos was also tasteless. If we can joke about it, fine. We can't let it overwhelm us. But the fact of the matter is that this happened all of six years ago and people will be angry for what this is. It was tasteless, but as long as you know that.
After reading just about.... 1200 points of view - I only have this to say:
I feel strangely invigorated by peoples willingness to join a cause or speak their opinion - but at the same time I'm depressed at how empty people's lives are - so much so that they argue about something that doesn't even exist (this is a comic - nothing more than ideas poured out on paper in colorful images, clips and phrases - thoughts visualized. And that of a cartoon, a story of fictional and mythological characters and ideas for whom there is no solid evidence of their existance.) And once again, I'm torn because of people's passion for what they believe and what joy that brings me, but then the depression because in the same space I'm using to express my views, someone else will use the same amount of space to tear down someone elses opinion or they might type an ignorant view of the world based solely on their own life experience and damn the rest of the world (all because they refuse to study and learn - and see things from another angle.) Maybe I'm just crazy.
I say leave it - art should not be censored and there can be no law against thought - and therefore no man should be allowed to tie a noose around self-expression.
Stay Crazy Bleedman... because no one in the world knows how to tax that.
Leave it up. It stands as a reminder of what our world has been through. If we can move on from those incidents as a stronger nation (hell, a stronger world), then looking back on those events that made us stronger isn't a crime.
I believe pretty much ANYTHING should be alowed (I can't think today) as long as there are warnings so people can know ahead of time what they should be expecting. Other than that FREE SPEECH is FREE SPEECH, so stop moaning about it, dammit.
P.S. I live in America
You're definately treading in dangerous waters here, but I think the scenario in question was very creative. I had the thought to do something similar with a pair of villains I've contrived, (having them responsible for historical events of great terror) and I suppose if I did then it would upset people. I must say it's very mature of you to do this, and invite people to discuss it. I will learn from your example.
I just recently saw a mordern art piece of Osama being hung from a family's kitchen light. Another in the series was his head rolling around on the floor next to a bably with an axe. If that's okay, then what you are doing is fine. Modern art is all about expression and perspective. I'm glad you are keeping it, because it would be utterly ridiculous and a violation of your rights if you didn't.
By the way, I'm really enjoying the series. I had to re-read it from the begining and a few parts have given me laugh attacks!
Leave it up. I feel like all people who read it and said take it down are just idiotic. You DID state that it MIGHT offend some. And I quote, from the warning page,"VIEWER AND READER'S DISCRETION IS ADVISED." People just didn't take your warnings seriously, as usual (especially in America). If I must, I WILL LEARN HOW TO MAKE A PETITION TO SAVE BLEEDMAN'S ART! Okay, I've finish yelling. And I have emptied my mind of arguments.....for now....
We should censure ourselves… as long as we take the responsibilities of our action then thus who chose to see your comic will take that chance. As for the 9/11, it was a tragic time. Yet blocking it out doesn’t make it go away. As using it in a comic doesn’t make it less tragic. You go bleed man. After all, you have a talent, and a style all your own. Keep up the art! ^_^
One should never censore themselves just because others may be upset by something. I've learned that while writing my novels. Sure people may get upset, but stiring emotions is part of art. So don't take it down and keep up the good work.
You have no reason to pull it. If people are offended by it, they either A) need to grow up, B) no longer be allowed to enjoy your art, or C) *this portion of this post has been edited out due to content*.
Death happens, deal with it people. And let the good artists like bleedman here do his work.
Bleedman I just read this page and your very long comment and I have to say... I completely agree with you! Every comic, anime, show, movie, etc. have always shown. Good will always prevail! theme but in real life most people tend to be really stupid and selfish that they end up killing, hurting, etc. themselves and/or other people.
P.S. I really like your comics and art. Keep up the good work!
I want to care about what these people go through. But I can't afford to care at this point. I've seen 9/11 on TV, and learned I can't do a thing. I can't worry about the bad stuff going on in the world---all I can do is hope for the best. I believe in reaping the fruits that you nurtured---if they nurtured corruption, that's what they'll get in the long run. I see glimpses of the "news"---the bad stuff in the world. I believe the news don't tell the entire story.
My point is---I can't worry. I think it'll turn out for the best. Maybe I am stupid. But, hey---better stupid than dead by my own hands. (Suicide doesn't lead anywhere either.)
Now, for artistic comments... you pulled off with a single page in the second chapter what Hideo Kojima pulled off with a game plot's climax. I salute you. In fact, just for that, I vote... LEAVE IT!
no matter how unfortunate an incident it was, it should not be brushed under a rug. Those pages represent that death is never kind, and even though some may veiw the pages as a wrong way to interpret the motives of favorite characters; that truely is the mindset that mandy has always had. death. destruction. evil. using real events may send a shiver up your spine, but i for one applaud bleedman in reminding all of us of the horror of that day and those before and making the characters become more alive and realistic. if you are offended, you should just get over it and move on. no, i dont mean the pain of losing someone (I myself lost an uncle), but blaming bleedman for expressing his view of certain characters. so thank you bleedman, thank you for reminding us that life is precious and sacred and that we should love those we care for, and learn from the mistakes of others. never forget.
Oye, Bleedman. when you say "ch2 p7_8" what does it mean for us? Maybe im Slow, but i can only see Dates for the Comicpages.
If its, that splitti-splatti Scene staring Minie Mandy, then please keep it that way for 2 Reason:
1. It must something happen to her so she gets that undead-like appearing, and for that...
2. ...don't torture her a second time
Ah, this is a very special moment. for Grim junior I mean. What is he going to do? Will someone else come to help? Well, I think its a good time to show some hidden Grim-Powers, but this will settle the Comic for a fighting like one. If so, don't worry, there is enough room for making other things.
Hope i didnt say to many wrong, im not born in to this Language^^"
I know this hell of late, but I would like to say this...
It needs to stay up. True art is meant to make people angry, sad, happy, or even depressed reviving their memories of a past event. People who are like "RAWR IT'S HORRID TAKE IT DOWN RAWR!!!!one!111eleven" Souldn't stress any concern. Thier too childish to state an opion. Even is they are truely upset. They should truthfuly be happy that a peice of art revived such pain. It's not often that somthing made now a days made to purely entertain, make so many people question what had happend and thier views. People try to stir such pain and agony and never pass. You on the other hand wasn't even trying to offend anyone and yet you have.
So even if dA decides to take it down after so long, put it up somewhere else.
I think it should be retooled just because it doesn't make much sense plotwise. A reaper reaps souls that die, they don't CAUSE death. They just appear when the death occurs. Maybe Mandy could plan 9/11 so she could reap souls, but not Katrina and mother nature events.
